Ana Fernández joined LSTS in November 2019 as a PhD student. She works in the EU PROTECT project - “Protecting Personal Data Amidst Big Data Innovation”, under the Marie-Sklodowska-Curie grant. Her PhD topic focuses on Digital Surveillance, where the collection of personal information through different technologies raise ethical issues, such as diminishing autonomy, dignity or imbalance of power-relations. Her proposal focuses on how data protection regulation and technology design must respond to personalisation-technologies. She obtained a master’s degree in Philosophy of Science, Technology and Society at the University of Twente, The Netherlands, with a master thesis on Big Data Ethics. She became very interested in the persuasive potential of data technologies. After her studies she joined H2020 projects, SHERPA and SIENNA, from which Ana participated in a critical study of ethical issues and guidelines for the EU in data surveillance and AI. Her interests in data ethics and surveillance has been shown in her work, which characterises for the importance of revising ethical and legal principles in the new technologies, specially in the use of personal data.
